Very truly yours,

L. S. McDaniel, President

Elated that he had gotten Max a job offer, and convinced that this would gain him Non-Quota Immigrant status and hence rapid admission to America, Julius hastened to relay the good news to Flörsheim. Unsure of Max’s present location or condition, he addressed the letter to Hela in hopes that she would pass it on to her father:

December 13, 1938

My Dear Cousin Helaine:

I am indeed sorry that I could not answer your letter sooner, but I wanted to wait until I had some good news to write you and now I believe I have excellent news for you all.

Please be sure and get this information to Cousin Max if it is possible as it will prove very important to you all.

Today a letter was mailed to the American Consul at Stuttgart, Germany, requesting him to contact Cousin Max offering him a position as professor of Chemistry at Kanawha College, here in Charleston, W. Va. USA. This means that all of you will be able to come over immediately providing no unseen circumstances come up. I was given to understand that this was the only way I could get you all over here without waiting a terribly long time.

I shall enclose a copy of the letter that was written to the American Consul that you will be familiar with it if you are questioned regarding same. If you do not receive word from the Consul within a certain length of time you should find out definitely if he received this letter.

It is useless to tell you how worried we are regarding you and family and how much it affects us all when we think of the predicament you are in, but there is little we can do to alleviate your untold misery. This offer of the Kanawha College is the one bright spot in the future for helping you all.

Now Helaine please do me the favor of writing us just as often as you can as we must keep in touch with each other, keep up your courage and everything will turn out alright [sic] if we keep on fighting together.

Be sure and extend our love to the whole family and anxiously awaiting your reply to my letter I am, devotedly,
